Before your session — get ready

Do this in advance, not during the session. We start hands-on right away, so there's no time for installs or IT tickets live. Five minutes now saves the whole group time later.

  • Get a Claude Pro plan ($20/month) — sign up at claude.ai. Pro is enough for this class.
  • Install the Claude desktop app (Mac/Windows) — download it from claude.ai/download. Claude Code runs only in the desktop app, not on the website, so the desktop app is required for this course.
  • Log in and start a new chat.
  • Run the readiness test — ask Claude: "Give me a 3-step plan to write a short status report." If you get an answer back, your setup works. 🎉
  • Check the basics — stable internet, charger plugged in, a quiet spot.
  • Bring a project folder — a folder on your computer with real files we can open and work in (ideally a Git repo). No suitable task of your own? I'll provide one for learning during the session.
  • Tell me you're ready — once the readiness test worked, reply to your booking confirmation so we can start on time.

Using Claude Code on the desktop

Claude Code is the coding tool we run from the Claude desktop app. To use it, install these three free tools in advance. Each is a normal installer — on a work laptop your IT may need to approve them, so ask early.

  • Node.js — the engine Claude Code runs on. Download the green LTS version from nodejs.org.
  • Git — tracks changes to your files so nothing gets lost. Get it from git-scm.com. On Windows this also installs Git Bash, the terminal Claude Code uses — just accept the default options.
  • Python — needed for many automation and data tasks. Download from python.org; on Windows tick "Add Python to PATH" during install.

Optional but recommended

  • VS Code — a free code editor to view and edit your files alongside Claude Code. Download from code.visualstudio.com.

> Don't worry about wiring it all together — we check each tool and finish the Claude Code setup together in the session. Having the three installed just means we start building instead of configuring.

  • Einen Projektordner mitbringen — ein Ordner auf deinem Rechner mit echten Dateien, die wir öffnen und bearbeiten können (idealerweise ein Git-Repo). Keine eigene passende Aufgabe? Ich stelle eine zum Lernen für die Sitzung bereit.
  • Sag mir Bescheid, dass du bereit bist — sobald der Bereitschaftstest geklappt hat, antworte auf deine Buchungsbestätigung, damit wir pünktlich starten.

Claude Code auf dem Desktop nutzen

Claude Code ist das Coding-Tool, das wir aus der Claude-Desktop-App starten. Um es zu nutzen, installiere diese drei kostenlosen Tools im Voraus. Jedes ist ein normales Installationsprogramm — auf einem Firmenlaptop muss die IT es ggf. freigeben, frag also früh.

  • Node.js — die Laufzeit, auf der Claude Code läuft. Lade die grüne LTS-Version von nodejs.org.
  • Git — verfolgt Änderungen an deinen Dateien, damit nichts verloren geht. Hol es von git-scm.com. Unter Windows wird dabei auch Git Bash installiert — das Terminal, das Claude Code nutzt. Einfach die Standardoptionen übernehmen.
  • Python — für viele Automatisierungs- und Datenaufgaben nötig. Lade es von python.org; unter Windows beim Installieren "Add Python to PATH" anhaken.

Optional, aber empfohlen

  • VS Code — ein kostenloser Code-Editor, um deine Dateien neben Claude Code anzusehen und zu bearbeiten. Lade ihn von code.visualstudio.com.
